The Grand European Castle of Awadh: Constantia
Rising dramatically on the eastern outskirts of Lucknow amidst sprawling green pastures, Constantia is unlike any other heritage structure in India. Built in 1795 by French adventurer, soldier, and polymath Major General Claude Martin, this breathtaking baroque chateau marries French neo-classical terraces, Italian Renaissance bastions, and Mughal bastions into a singular cinematic palace.
Today, this majestic monument houses La Martiniere College, one of India's oldest and most prestigious boarding schools, established under the visionary philanthropist's final will.
Architectural Splendor: Lions, Gargoyles & The 'Lat' Obelisk
Every corner of Constantia reflects Claude Martin's eccentric architectural genius:
- Rampant Lion Sculptures: Crowning the sweeping curved terraces stand colossal stone statues of snarling lions with burning gas beacons in their open jaws, designed to light up the night sky.
- Classical Mythological Statues: The roof balustrades feature dozens of terracotta and plaster statues depicting Greek and Roman deities alongside gothic gargoyles.
- The 125-Foot 'Lat' Column: Erected in the center of the lake directly in front of the main palace, this towering fluted column once supported an observation telescope and lightning rod.
The Crypt of Claude Martin & 1857 Royal Battle Honors
La Martiniere College holds the extraordinary distinction of being the only school in the entire British Commonwealth to have been awarded official Royal Battle Honors ('Defence of Lucknow, 1857') for the valor displayed by its staff and students during the siege of the British Residency. In the subterranean crypt below, Claude Martin's original sarcophagus remains preserved in quiet solemnity.
