Chowk is the historic soul of Lucknow. Established during the prime of the Nawabi era, its narrow, labyrinthine alleys carry the lingering scent of rose petals, hydro-distilled sandalwood attars, and the rhythmic metallic tapping of master craftsmen beating pure silver into gossamer-thin edible leaves (vark).
The Attar Fragrance Legacy of Chowk
Here, centuries-old perfumeries like Sugandh Co. and Asghar Ali continue using the ancient Deg-Bhapka technique (steam distillation in copper stills sealed with clay). The crown jewel of Lucknow fragrances is Mitti Attar—the divine petrichor scent of baked Gangetic clay after the first monsoon rain, captured drop by drop in pure sandalwood oil base. Other regal fragrances include Ruh Gulab (Damask rose), Khus (wild vetiver), and warm winter Shamama.
Silver Vark & Zardozi Workshops
In the side-lanes of Chowk, listen for the rhythmic clatter of Vark-kash artisans. They sandwich pure silver pellets between ox-hide leather sheets and beat them continuously with heavy iron mallets for up to 6 hours until transformed into gossamer silver foil used to garnish Awadhi sweets and royal biryanis. Nearby, zardozi master embroiders weave gold and silver bullion wire (zari) into bespoke sherwanis and bridal tapestries.
