The Royal South Gateway of Awadh: Alambagh Kothi
Long before South Lucknow became a bustling commercial metropolis centered on Alambagh market, the area was anchored by the grand fortified gardens of Alambagh Palace. Built in 1849 by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah for Queen Alam Ara, the enclosure featured grand two-storey pavilions, corner bastions, and sweet fruit orchards.
The 1857 Strategic Stronghold
During the First War of Independence, Alambagh Palace became the crucial military beachhead for British forces led by General Sir James Outram and Sir Henry Havelock. Today, its surviving brick gateways and historic memorial grounds provide a striking historic counterpoint to the vibrant Alambagh market nearby.
